A Software Craftsman is an agile developer who follows the philosophy described in the Software Craftsman Manifesto:

  1. Not only operational software, but also well-designed software.
  2. Not just adapting to change, but constantly adding value.
  3. Not only individuals and their interactions, but also a professional community.
  4. Not only collaboration with customers, but also productive partnerships.

This manifesto, takes up the terms of the agile manifesto, because software craftsmanship has been thought of as a 5th rule of agility.

We therefore find the values of quality (robustness of the software), professionalism, know-how, experience sharing, and humility (questioning), but then what are the tools of the software craftsman?

For the quality of the code, a "Craftsman" will rely on proven design methods such as DDD (Domain-Driven Design), TDD (Test-Driven Development), OOP (Object-Oriented Programming) for example.

For knowledge sharing, it will be possible to set up peer-programming or mob-programming sessions, for example, a working method consisting of several people working on the same machine.

Thanks to an agile project management driven in SCRUM, the artisan developer will also be able to question himself and think (collectively) about ways to improve his work at the end of each sprint, during the retrospective.

This article is a very short introduction to the principles of software craftsmanship which is in practice a very complex philosophy, but if you are interested you will find all the answers to your questions in this book: "The Software Craftsman: Professionalism, Pragmatism, Pride" by Sandro Mancuso
